In a bid to lead the charge toward a more sustainable aviation industry, Avelo Airlines has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Seattle-based Vortex Control Technologies (VCT). The collaboration aims to equip Avelo’s fleet of Boeing Next-Generation (NG) 737 jetliners with state-of-the-art fuel and emissions-reducing Finlets, marking a significant step forward in the airline’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Avelo’s decision to adopt VCT’s Finlets positions it as the pioneer airline globally to integrate this innovative technology onto 737-800 aircraft, further solidifying its status as a trailblazer in the aviation sector. The installation of Finlets on seven of Avelo’s 16 737s fleet has already begun, with plans to outfit the entire fleet underway.

The introduction of VCT Finlets is expected to yield remarkable results, with Avelo estimating a 1.4% reduction in total fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Once the entire fleet is retrofitted, the airline anticipates an annual reduction of 11 million pounds of carbon emissions and 560,000 gallons of fuel, underlining its commitment to sustainability.

Andrew Levy, Chairman, and CEO of Avelo Airlines, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing Avelo’s dedication to embracing innovative solutions that drive both operational efficiency and environmental responsibility. Levy stated, “Investing in cost-saving innovations and technologies is a cornerstone of our business. We are excited to be the first airline in the world to install VCT Finlets on Boeing NG 737-800 aircraft.”

The implementation of VCT Finlets, a patented array of small fins strategically placed on an aircraft’s fuselage, represents a significant milestone in Avelo’s sustainability journey. By modifying airflow and reducing drag, Finlets not only contribute to reduced fuel consumption and carbon emissions but also enhance aircraft performance and endurance.

Andrew G. Morgan, CEO of Vortex Control Technologies, hailed the collaboration with Avelo as instrumental in advancing sustainability goals within the aviation industry. Morgan emphasized the extensive research and development efforts behind the FAA-certified Finlets, underscoring Avelo’s pivotal role in driving progress towards a greener future.

Avelo’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond technological innovation. Since its inception in April 2021, Avelo has prioritized efficiency, affordability, and convenience for its customers. With a focus on unserved routes and underserved communities, Avelo has championed accessibility and choice in air travel, while maintaining industry-leading reliability.

As Avelo continues to redefine the air travel experience, its partnership with Vortex Control Technologies represents a significant stride towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious aviation industry.
